Got some schedules in my Cognos environment who failed with the message:

CNC-SDS-0413 There was a problem in executing the task. The user authentication failed. It may not be possible to rerun the task.

To solve this I followed the next steps:

1. Renew the credentials (see how on this article)

2. Go to System Administration

3. Click on Schedules

4. Find the schedule with the error in the list

5. Click on the small blue triangle

6. Choose modify the schedule

7. Change nothing

8. Click OK to save the schedule

After that you can check the schedule on the next upcomming event.



Turn on Cognos Auditing

Follw the next steps to turn on Auditing in Cognos Administration.

Cognos Configuration

1. Open Cognos Configuration

2. Right-click on Logging and from the popup menu select New Resource->Destination.

3. Name the new resource Audit, and leave the type as Database, then click OK.

4. Right-click on the resource Audit, and from the popup menu select  New Resource->Database.

5. Name the database resource, and change the type to, then click OK.

6. Select the database above, and enter the database details

7. Right-click on Audit, and from the popup menu select Test.

8. If the Audit database test is successful then click Close, else click Details and investigate the problem.

9. Now restart your cognos server.

Cognos Administration

1. Login to the Cognos Server with an Administrator Account

2. Select Administer Cognos Content

3. From the small menu on the left select System

4. From the Lower Right panel select Set Properties


5. Select the Category Logging, change all values to Basic, and select the boxes Audit the native query for batch report service and Audit the native query for report service

In the same article someone noted that there have been no changes in Cognos 10 regarding Auditing.

Create Data Source Connection

In Cognos Administration > Configuration > Data Source connections you have to configure your connections tot the database.

The following steps show how to do that.

1. Login in cognos and go to Adinistration > Configuration > Data Source Connections


2. Click on the reight side of the screen on “New Data Source”. Give the new datasource a name. Click NEXT


3. Select the type of Database, eg. Oracle. click NEXT


4. Enter the TNS_ENTRY for the database. This one has to respond when you perform: TNSPING <TNS_ENTRY>. Also choose the schema that contains the datbase objects you need to connect to. Signon with User ID and Password. Create a signon for “Everyone”


5. When you click on test the connection a test is performed with the used settings


6. When the test result is “succesfull” you can carry on. For normal situations the next screen is left blank, no options highlighted


7. Click Finish to create the source connection

This created source can be selected in Framework Manager when you use the data import wizzard.

When you choose a common name for the database connection, eg. SOURCE_DB and you have to use this name in every cognos environment. This way it is easy to migrate reports and packages.

General instructions to set advanced server parameters


1. Start IBM Cognos Connection.

2. In the upper-right corner, click Launch, IBM Cognos Administration

3. On the Status tab, click System.

4. In the upper-left corner of the Scorecard pane, click the arrow to view the Change view menu. Click Services, and then click All.

5. Click the arrow next to ReportService to display the Actions menu, and then click Set properties.

6. Click the Settings tab.

7. Click Edit next to Advanced Settings.

8. Select Override the settings acquired from the parent entry.

9. In the Parameter column, enter the desired parameter

10. In the Value column, enter the default value

11. Click OK twice

12. Redo steps 5 – 11 for the BatchReportService
