One of the anoying things in Cognos 8.x was, when you export a report to Excel, that some grouped cells kept being grouped in Excel. So when a user wants to analyse data in Excel some data is missing (after ungrouping).
In Cognos 10 there is a property to solve this. Go to the report properties and deselect the option “Group repeating cells when exporting to Excel”
In a report you can work with ‘sections’ to make a grouping more visible. For example you want to show some charts with sales data for each branch of the company.

In Cognos it is possible to group these rows
Follow the next steps to group the rows in the table
1. Select the column in the table witch you want to group
2. Choose in Report Studio –> Structure –> Group/degroup
